最近啊，我的一个朋友闹了一个笑话。几天前，他邀请几个外国朋友去游泳。一个女性朋友告诉他，“My Aunt Flo is visiting. I can’t go with you.”

这个朋友接着回了一句“Oh say hi to her for me.”，“帮我带个好”！

这句话中的Aunt Flo可不是Flo婶婶！

Aunt Flo实际是一个委婉语，意思是“大姨妈”！My Aunt Flo is visiting的意思是“我来大姨妈了。”

委婉语在英语中称为euphemism，通俗地理解就是“说好听的话”。

也就是使用更文雅的语言，避免让他人产生不愉快的联想。比如“死亡”相关的词，我们就会经常用委婉语来表达。

比如，美国前总统林肯在《葛底斯堡演讲》(The Gettysburg Address)中说过这样一句话“We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live.”

这句话的意思是“我们在这场战争中的一个伟大战场上集合，烈士们为使这个国家能够生存下去而献出了自己的生命，我们在此集会是为了把这个战场的一部分奉献给他们作为最后安息之所。”

a final resting place=graveyard 墓地

gave their lives=died 死亡

这句话中，a final resting place代替了graveyard，gave their lives代替了died。这些表达就属于委婉语，读起来更有感情，也更能体现对将士们的尊重

再比如，对于一些特别的职业，由于比较敏感，我们也会用委婉语来表达。比如，“*女”。美国前总统小布什在父亲的葬礼上的悼词有这样一句话“He was a tolerant man. After all, he was kind and neighborly to the women with whom he, mom and I shared a bathroom in our small duplex – even after he learned their profession – ladies of the night.”

在这句话中，小布什谈到了父亲是一个宽容的人，即使在得知和我们共同于是的那些女人是*女之后，他依然对她们和蔼可亲。

葬礼是一个庄严的场合，如果在悼词中出现prostitutes，显然不合适，所以小布什用ladies of the night这一委婉语来代替。
